Spider Eaters is about a woman who grew up during the cultural revolution. Rae talked about her family and how her family problems and her hardships of growing up in the upper class. Her family is rich and her ancestors were apart of the emperor’s court. Even her father is close to those in the communist government. Rae is a rich girl during the revolution and it is not good to be rich during this time. She has to find ways to deal with events that go on around her.

Rae’s childhood was different from other children. She was in the upper class and her parents were not around that much. The only real guardian she had was her nanny. She considered her nanny to be family because her parents taught here that it was wrong to call her a servant. Her parents were always busy dealing with the revolution and was only home to sleep. Rae had no choice but to call her nanny aunty because that what she ended up being to her. Other children had the same problem in china. Rae did not have that many friends and in Switzerland she did not have friends. Her parents never really talked to anyone. It was all work for them and no play. Her father had to write her about her mother’s death. That is a real low for a child. In her heart she felt that she would always be alone with no friends and no real love from her family. She grew up not having anyone so the rest of her life was doomed to loneliness. Rae’s father moved the family back to China after they lived in Switzerland until she was five. There she lived with her wealthy grandma. (9-11)

Her grandmother lived in her family house ever since her dad was apart of the emperor’s court and was over thrown when the Qing Dynasty ended. It was a big traditional style home with beautiful trees and flowers. But it was all destroyed when a few revolutionary families decided to move and destroy the home. They put grandma in the shed where she eventually died. And they built a kitchen out of scraps and ruined the pretty trees and flowers. Traditional style anything was bad during the revolution. (16) Her father ended up moving them into a new home in Beijing anyways and grandma’s house was officially the revolutions house.

Rae’s dad was apart of the revolution ever since he was in college. His mom did not know because he was and underground member. If he was caught he could have been killed. Rae tried to figure out the reason why he join and all she could think of was the fact that the Japanese mistreated the Chinese people. Or he probably did not like the nationalist government politics. Dad went off and signed up to be a communist and he was real good at it because he became one of the communist officials. That is why he was always to busy to take care of her. (33-34) Rae supported the idea of communism because her father taught her that communism would lead to a better way of living. She believed him because she could get whatever she wanted and thought it was an endless supply of food and anything else she enjoyed in life. The schools started setting up competitions to get the children to collect iron and flies were collected as well. When Rae’s little brother started school she could not see him until Saturday which made aunty sad for so many reasons. When her mom was alive she taught aunty how to read and write and she ended up going to school. There she learned how to read and write even more characters. (54-56)

During the Great Leap Forward food became very scarce and it was hard to even get rice. Aunty had her ways to getting food and she even would take Rae along with her when she got food to show her how she got it. All over china people were dying because of the lack of food. Thanks to the lies of the officials and news papers food was even harder to come by in the cities. Rice and other items sold in stores and restaurants were doubled but people would still buy them out of hunger. (62-63) Naturally there were going to be sibling rivalries between her and her little brother. She became jealous of her little brother because he is a boy and boys are important in china. She did not like the fact that he was getting more of the attention. (66-67)

Rae went to middle school and studied hard with the other students. When the Cultural Revolution started she felt that it was time that the students take charge. She wanted to get back at the teachers who had did her and other students wrong. During this time the elders were being taught by the younger generation. (116-117) Mao taught that the students were to lead because they were the future. And many of the teachers got in trouble because the students would turn them in for going against Mao’s teachings. Rae and her family had to get rid of everything that reminded them of the ancient times. They burned books and cut each others hair because it was too long. The family did not wont trouble with the Red Guards. (126-127)

Rae decided that she could not handle the events that were going on while the Red Guards wee on patrol. Many people suffered and there was a lot of backstabbing. Friends would turn on each other the there was a lot of death. She thought the only way she could get away from it was to go to the farm and volunteer there. She went to the country side ready to work in a place she knew nothing about. (159) she learned many things living on the farm. She did not earn much money working there so she had to learn to survive without it.  Her parents ended up moving to the country side while her little brothers lived with aunty in the city. Her family’s condition was bad because of the lack of money and her mother was changing physically. Her appearance made it seem as if she was getting sicker. (205,208)

Rae ended up going back to Beijing and there she found a love interest in a man named Zhou. They came from different backgrounds but she really liked him. (251) Their love story is a lot like the story of Romeo and Juliet, but his father was a nationalist leader while hers was apart of the communist party. She wanted to marry him but could not because her mind was somewhere else. Zhou ended up marrying another woman. Rae got a telegram about her mom and when she went home she found out that her mom had died. Her relationship with her parents had grown stronger since the Cultural Revolution.  Aunty’s health grew worse after her mom died and she too ended up dying from health problems as well. (279)

Rae’s story was very dramatic and full of disappointments and events that bought happiness. She ended up living in her Aunty’s house alone. Like she thought in her childhood she would be alone when she really was not. Her memories of her aunt was always wit her. Even thought many things did not go her way she continued to keep on going. Rae had a difficult life but she continued to live as if nothing was wrong.

A Man Who Loved His People

Shannon Walls

powers meant that they would suffer even more.  It seemed the only way he could get through to the people was with his words and literature. He went back to China for a short time because he went to see his family. He soon found out that he could not practice his free speech without getting into serious trouble with the government. Lu Xun ended up going back to Japan to practice his free speech there. He lived in many places in Japan to practice his writing more freely. (pg 60-63, Shiging)

Lu Xun was a great man in China’s history. His goal in life was to make China a better living place for his people. He was not like all of the other government officials who only thought of themselves. If his people were not happy he was not happy. No matter where he was he thought ot his home and how his people were suffering.

Lu Xun was born in Shaoxing.  At a young age he loved to read and owned many book collections.  It was only right that he went to school.  Life was normal for him until he found out that his father was sick.  When his father died he had to take care of his family. Even with all of the family’s responsibilities on his shoulders he still studied. With the Chinese government and the way of life was not making his job even easier. He stopped going to school after his fathers died and his brothers just went on their separate ways.

Lu Xun later ended up going to the Nanjing Navel Academy. He continued to go to school there.  He became interested in the sciences. Because of the lack of money he had to go back home. His mother knew the importance of his education and demanded that he go back.  He started to realize the mistreatment of his people be the foreigners and the government. He ended up being volunteered to go to Japan and to study abroad there. Once here started in Japan he learned of the western sciences and he wanted to learn more about it.  He was also into literature and his mind was still set on saving his people somehow. Influenced by Sun Yet- Sen teachings on getting China back strong he joined revolutionary youth groups. (pg 50, Shiging)

Lu Xun started writing and translating stories while he was in school in Japan. He grew fond of historical heroes throughout the world’s history. When he learned even more about western medical practices he thought that becoming better in this field could really help his people. If the people had better medicines then they could take better care of themselves. With that knowledge the people would be healthier and happier.  After the Russo-Japanese war in China he became even angrier with Chinas way of handling their problems. The school that he was at was showing slides of the war and the events that happened during the war. This made Lu Xun feel as thought what he was learning would not help his people at all. China’s lose to the foreign powers meant that they would suffer even more.

Lu Xun kept up with all of the events in China and was still in the revolutionary groups. He ended going back to China to spread his word through his writings. He also went back to help his family in their time of need. After the revolution and the overthrowing of the Qing Dynasty he went back to his home town where he became head of his town’s schools. He started running a newspaper expressing how he felt about the issues in china. His most memorable works to get the people involved started during the democratic revolution.  It was also around the time that the communist party was being developed. The party to him was more inspiration for his work and often referenced how they were aiming to help the people. He noticed that they wanted to improve China as a whole. Lu Xun decided to join the communist party. While he wrote the party supported his works and teachings. Lu Xun would often go to colleges and lecture what he thought was write for the people. At a women’s college he became aware of the female leaders of the revolution and he later met Xu Guanping. She supported his work and ended up spending a lot of time with Lu Xun. She was also convinced by his work to join the communist party with him. While all of this is going on Chinas government is not set and the proveniences are falling to the warlords.  The more destruction occurred the more followers Lu Xun received. On March 18th,a group of non- violent protester were demonstrating at a government building and the police ended up slaughtering many of the demonstrators. Lu Xun was very upset with the event of many youth revolutionist ended up dieing in that massacre. He ended up writing about the event and went to the memorial for those who died. He wrote an excerpt on one of the leaders named Liu Hezhen. The killings in Beijing increased and he ended up moving him and Guanping to Shanghai. There he would continue to practice his writings. (pg 79-80, 88, 179,203-205, shigin)

During the new cultural movement Lu Xun still practiced his free speech. He ended writing a group of essays he called Two Hearts. A group called Kuomintang was going around assassinating people who were not censoring their works. If the movies or newspapers had anything showing a repressed China the head of the group was killed. Even in those dark days the people still fallowed Lu Xun.  Lu Xuns writings became encouragement for the youth to make a better China. Lu Xun ended up becoming ill but he refused to leave his people behind in such a bad place without freedom. Even with the advice from his friends Lu Xun did not leave China to seek medical help. He died in October but his writing was still used to boost the moral of soldiers and his people. (pg 282-283, Shigin)

Lu Xun had a rough life and all he could think about was the well being of his people. He went through a lot to help his people. In return he gained the love of the whole country. Even after his death he is a hero to those who could not fight back.

Lu Xun kept up with all of the events in China and was still in the revolutionary groups. He ended going back to China to spread his word through his writings. He also went back to help his family in their time of need. After the revolution and the overthrowing of the Qing Dynasty he went back to his home town where he became head of his town’s schools. so nimble simple words can create the deepest scars
so lost i keep committing sins
i don't won't to be a burden to you
i'll try not to get in your way
but how i think of you constantly
and how i love to look into your beauteous eyes
i'm so naive to the meaning of love and what it can do for me
i'll try to find the meaning within you
so clueless i can't see that it is me running you off
when you're not here with me i'm missing you to the point of tears
how i want to hold you every night and to hear your voice everyday
i would look the calender for the day that i'll see you again
now i can only wish for and dream of you
how can someone be such a sweet poison
how could i be so weak
but how i think i love you

Living in the Qing Dynasty was a long and difficult.  The young children had no say in who they will marry or what they will be when they grow up.  I could not imagine what my life would be like if I lived back in the Qing Dynasty.  For those who lived this life might have not seen happiness in any other way. The dynasty was full of men trying to become officials under the emperor. That was not an easy task. but even living as an official was difficult.

If my parents had to choose who I would be spending the rest of my life with I would be really upset.  The children in the Qing Dynasty had their husbands and wives chosen at a young age.  Shen Fu’ first wife to be died at a young age and he went on to be engaged to another girl. His wife was chosen by his parents and uncle and they where still children. The good thing about that is that they grew up together and they really cared for each other.  Many of the marriages here in America do not last that long because the commitment rate is very low. In a strange way I would not mind having my husband being chosen. At least I know we could be together no matter what happened.  Yun married Shen Fu and she stayed by his side even in the harshest times of their relationship. I don’t think I could find my husband a mistress to try to improve his status. But they didn’t really call the women mistresses but concubines and courtesans.  Sometimes even the concubines had more power than the men they were serving.  I did not understand why a wife would want to try to find a concubine for her husband. To me it was a bad thing to even cheat on your loved one.  I guess no matter what she was going to stay by her husband’s side.  Yun (Page 9,25 Shen Fu)

The system to become an official is five times harder than it is to get into a college here in present day America.  Starting at a young age boys would study different books of poetry and philosophy.  The boys would study real hard in order to become a low paying official. The boys had to learn how to be scholars because the old teachings of past officials were more important that being a bureaucrat. I felt sorry for Shen because he only got to become a secretary. They can only watch over officials who rule over their home districts.  Shen took the test and failed to become low ranking official. Instead he became a yamen and he was a secretary that was in charge of the law department of the home district officials.  They law part is one of the hardest jobs that a secretary could have. I thought the law in America was hard to manage. Shen fu was always in trouble with debt in which I can understand because of the life he was living. He was a lower official and he was not getting paid much at all.  Being a lower official did not stop him from painting and writing poetry for his wife and others. Shen would try to sell his works to other people but I don’t think he was good enough. (Page 10,11)

The life of Shen fu and the records that he wrote would also help other official new comers. His love for his wife and his willingness to become better taught me a lot. I even learned that no matter what happens life goes on and the love can help make a person stronger.  The Qing dynasty was full of scholarly men and women who we not educated but love still prospered and life continued.

The Hard of a Secretary

Yun (Page 9,25 Shen Fu)

how stupid can a girl be. She constantly calls just hear your voice.Yet she knows its annoying but she can't get over the fact that the feelings she has for you is stronger than anything she has ever felt before.her friends tell her to stop and that she is only hurting herself even more.she won't list. She is too determined, she never quites.she will sit alone for a while just thinking of him and only him trying to figure out how to make things work. But deep down in her mind she knows that he'll never be hers. When her friends dog her out for being weak she cries out "so what i'm weak" because for once in her life time she has found someone worth holding on to.Well that's what she thinks.she calls over and over again just to hear his voice even if its on the answer machine. Some how it sooths her pain.He tells her that he will call her back and she would cancel  all of her plans just to wait by the phone. How stupid can a girl be to give advise and take  in others words of wisdom.while she sleeps alone he is off with the girl that he claims as his baby.Inside she is saying that should be me he is holding at night.Giving up all hope she stops feeling beautiful, she stops thinking about her life with a man.But deep down she cries out in pain. And as she writes to herself in her journal wondering if she will ever be held she cries the tears of all people who have suffered like her.How stupid can a girl be to be so damn sprung over someone who isn't worth it.
How stupid can i be.
